The thing about cycling in October in the UK is you never know what to expect. Studying the weather forecast is not always reliable, especially when cycling along the West coast of Wales, or any coast for that matter. Aberdovey, a beautiful little coastal village on the Northern side of the mouth of the Dovey river, was our preferred option today. Sometimes we’ll go North into the mountains, but today it was the prospect of warm sunshine and eating fish and chips from the Aberdovey chippy, overlooking the harbour, that appealed to us. After discussing the options and seeing there was a fair chance of sunshine and light winds for most of the day, we headed out South along the coast for our 50 miler!
Most of the ride is fairly flat but with a couple of climbs along the way, you know it's not all plain sailing. After eight miles or so we cross the Barmouth railway bridge, spanning the Mawddach estuary. The panoramic views from the bridge up the estuary towards Cadair Idris are breathtaking. For the next hour and a half we cycle south along the coast, sometimes climbing, and sometimes descending, nothing too difficult. The sea views are beautiful today, very calm with good visibility.
Just after midday we cycle into Aberdovey with hunger beginning to call! We have cycled here many times over the years, sometimes we approach it from the east after going over ‘Happy valley’ towards Machynlleth, We get our fish and chips and cycle a few hundred yards to the local park, where we can sit and eat them. This park has become one of our favourite destinations on the bikes. It overlooks the harbour, it never seems to have anyone else walking through it, and most importantly, it is always bathed in sunshine. The fish and chips are as delicious as ever, and after they have been consumed, we sit for half an hour thinking about the idea of having a quick nap! That would have been nice, but we decide to head back North for home. Today we have the added bonus of a slight tail wind-wonderful!
The views riding back seem to get better - maybe it’s the soft Autumn sunshine, or the satisfying memory of the food we’ve eaten. Hardly a car passes us today- now the August crowds have gone it's so much more enjoyable. The Lleyn Peninsula out to the west across Cardigan Bay looks enticing - maybe next weekend. We know one or two good chip shops there as well!
